Pediatric Dentistry

child-smiling-holding-toothbrush-pediatric-dentistryA pediatric dentist is a specialist who received at least 2-3 years of additional training after dental school. Bright Young Smiles has over 40 years experience as a pediatric dentist in Lighthouse Point and the Broward area. The focus of the specialty of pediatric dentistry is to prevent cavities and promote the development of healthy permanent teeth. Great dentistry is based on prevention! Dr. Young & his staff will educate parents on how to prevent cavities through proper diet habits, brushing and flossing routines, and the proper use of Fluorides. Orthodontic problems can be avoided if pacifier and thumb/finger sucking habits are dealt with at the appropriate ages. Pediatric dentists are also trained in early stage (interceptive) orthodontics. Mouth guards for contact sporting events are provided by our office as well as teeth whitening for our high school aged patients. Most children will lose their first tooth at age 5-7 years old, and will lose all of their baby teeth by age 12.

The essence of the specialty involves interacting with children. Each child requires a different level of time and attention. We always take our time with each patient to ensure they have a positive experience.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is the membership organization representing pediatric dentists and provides policies and guidelines for pediatric dentists. They have a resource for parents to use for information: http://www.aapd.org/parents/

Habits for your child to avoid:

  • Going to bed with a bottle of milk, juice, or formula. Even natural fruit juices are very high in sugar.
  • Pacifier, thumb, or finger sucking habits beyond the age of 18 months.
  • Juice in a sippy cup! This usually always leads to cavities.
  • Chewing gum with sugars…only sugar free gums.
  • If the first ingredient in any food product is “High Fructose Corn Syrup,” it may cause cavities.
    Drinking soda.

Habits to encourage:

  • Drink plenty of water and milk.
  • If you child must have juice, limit it only to meal time and rinse with water or brush their teeth after sugar exposures.
  • Help your child brush their teeth until they can do a great job on their own. For most kids, this is around age 7.
  • Look for candy and gum with the ingredient “Zylitol.” This is a natural sugar substitute that has been proven to prevent cavities.
